Research and History

Drawing on research and my experiences from visiting Germany, I had a clear vision of elements to include in my design. I had already identified the buildings I wanted to illustrate based on my research prior to the trip, and seeing them in person reinforced my choices. For the design style, I examined various German beer brands and signs, Olympic posters, and beer garden decorations.
The Radler was invented by a German innkeeper named Franz Kugler in the 1920s. According to the story, a large group of cyclists arrived at his tavern in the Bavarian countryside, thirsty and worn out. Facing a shortage of beer to satisfy the crowd, Franz devised a quick solution by mixing sparkling lemonade into his kegs to extend his beer supply. He named the drink "Radler," which is German for "cyclist."

Process

The path to the final product took some time. The initial version was completed in fall 2022 as part of a packaging class. While I was initially excited about the project, it required a significant overhaul. The core elements were strong, so I didn’t need to adjust the Orange and Grapefruit designs. However, the Lemon needed to be redrawn to match the style of the other two, which I addressed first. One major change was the logo, which I had always been dissatisfied with. It took several iterations to perfect it. I also revised the can backgrounds, which were too cluttered. I simplified them by removing some of the fruit illustrations and adding a gradient. Additionally, I upgraded from a 12oz bottle to a 16oz can to provide more design space and give the elements more room to breathe.
